Ministry of Waters and Forests

Duties The Minister for Water and Forests is responsible for implementing and monitoring the Government’s water and forest protection policy. In this capacity, and in liaison with the various ministerial departments concerned, he is responsible for the following actions:

1. Sustainable management of forests, fauna and flora

  • Promoting sustainable use of forest resources.
  • Definition and implementation of the national reforestation plan.
  • To encourage the development of the forest estate by public authorities and private operators.
  • Logging control.
  • Monitoring the training and marketing of timber products in liaison with the Minister for the Economy and Finance.
  • Management of hunting resources.
  • Implementation of national policies relating to the sustainable management of wildlife and its rational use in liaison with the Minister for the Environment.

2. Sustainable management and protection of water resources

  • Implementation of the Water Code with the Minister for Economic Infrastructures, the Environment, Agriculture, Health and Animal and Fisheries Resources.

3. Protection of flora and fauna

  • Maintaining the integrity of the State’s forest estate.
  • Fighting bush fires and defending forests in conjunction with the Ministries of Defence and Agriculture.
  • Implementation of conventions and treaties on the protection of flora and fauna.
  • Soil and water protection in conjunction with the Ministries of Agriculture and Animal and Fisheries Resources.

4. Development

  • Development of botanical gardens and zoological parks in collaboration with decentralised authorities.
